On a phone you do not even need to type the number. Tap the big Call button on any card and your handset opens its dialler with the number filled in. The call is the same £1.00 a minute service, plus your network’s access charge.
That access charge is where mobiles differ. Networks usually charge more per minute for 09 numbers than a landline provider does, and the amount varies by network and tariff. Check your provider’s price list under “premium rate” or “09 numbers” before you call. Some phone contracts bar 09 numbers altogether, and some pay-as-you-go plans cannot call them; if the call will not connect, that is the first thing to check.
